Over at the Craft Alliance, Jana Harper hosted the Let's Talk About Love Baby exhibition with over 250 artist books all playing with the theme of love, and my book was one of 'em!

Then a few blocks away, Subterranean Books had an opening for Pressing Destiny -- the Print Exchange I co-curated with Valerie Wallace. Both events corresponded with the Southern Graphics Council Conference - when printmakers turn a city into their Toyland. Lisa Bulawsky and many others at Wash U have done a fantastic job and I wish I had been there! Tune into the folks at Printeresting to catch more of the events!

Seattle Print Arts is proud to announce that the recipient of this year’s Larry Sommers Art Fellowship is Ben Moreau. We are delighted to be making this announcement on August 17th, which was Larry’s birthday. The Fellowship was established in memory of Larry with generous donations from colleagues, family and friends inspired by his passion for art and union activism.

The selection committee received twenty-nine applications. We were impressed by the quality of the work and diversity of media represented in all the submissions, making the decision very challenging.

Ben has proposed to use the Fellowship to develop and expand his current body of self-portraits as etchings, mezzotints and drawings.

In addition Seattle Print Arts is pleased to present Kelda Martensen and Lisa Hasegawa with Fellowship merit awards in recognition of their work and commitment to print arts.

A reception will be held to congratulate the artists and publicly announce the award.

Please join us Saturday, July 10th, at Burien Press for an exhibit featuring the collaborative work of Kelda Martensen and Stephanie Barenz, and Seattle architect and artist Ty Kelly.

Stephanie Barenz and Kelda Martensen met as graduate students at Washington University in St. Louis. Both had an affinity for the drafted line, and for evoking travel and a sense of place through referencing architecture and memory. Martensen relocated to Burien, and teaches and exhibits in the greater Seattle area. Barenz relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and teaches and exhibits in Milwaukee and Chicago. Wanting to reconnect with each other, Martensen and Barenz began a mail exchange over three months where each artist started five panels and then shipped the panels for the other to finish. The resulting ten panels were on exhibition May through June of 2010 at the Caggio Gallery in Milwaukee. To complete the circle, the panels are now in Burien for the Documented Journeys exhibit. These works are a collaborative effort to work with their shared and yet decidedly individual aesthetic and to bring in fragments of the Midwest, The Pacific Northwest, Europe, Africa, Japan and Alaska -- places where the two have collectively lived. These documented journeys aim not only to remember travels past, but to imagine travels and encounters yet to come.

We Belong to this band

We Belong to This Band is a collection of homages or portraits of artists and printmakers who have gone before us. It is meant to be an ephemeral monument that celebrates the lives of our artistic heroes and fellow mortals, propagating their memory through the printed image.

Participants contribute images of their heroes that are then printed and bound into tear-off pads, attached to garden stakes, and planted throughout the city of Minneapolis, to be taken by passers-by.

This activity will take place just before and during the MAPC Conference, “New World/Old World,” hosted by the University of Minnesota Regis Center for The Arts in Minneapolis, October 13 -16, 2010.

I chose Kanda Nissho. His work has inspired a collaborative short story I wrote with fiction writer Amy Bailey. It is still in the works but I hope to post progress on it soon!

BEGINNER’S BOOTCAMP - A Survey of Printmaking

Instructor: Kelda Martensen

Dates: Wednesdays, Jan. 20^th, 27^th, Feb. 3^rd, 10^th, and 17^th

Times: 6pm-10pm

This class is an introduction to multiple print processes including Intaglio (drypoint, etching, collagraph), Monotype, and Relief (linoleum carving). It will cover both the basics of printmaking (paper and plate preparation, registration, press handling), and the basics of each technique. The goal of this course is to introduce students to the discipline of printmaking and to the rich set of vocabulary and skills needed to create within the medium.

This is a great survey course for artists to discover which printmaking technique(s) suit them best.

Beginning to intermediate students. No experience necessary.
